U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform IDs Critical Lawsuit Reforms

A new report from the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform has identified several issues the Wisconsin Civil Justice Council is working to fix in Wisconsin as critical to improving the nation’s business climate.

The New Lawsuit Ecosystem: Trends, Targets and Players, “examines the developing lawsuit “ecosystem” and areas of litigation of most concern to the business community. The report examines the trends and players in six key litigation areas, offers insights into new emerging liability threats, and explores the growing alliance between state attorneys general and the plaintiffs’ bar.”

U.S. Chamber Applauds Signing of Nation’s Strongest Outside Counsel Sunshine Law

Lisa A. Rickard, president of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR), issued the following statement applauding Governor Scott Walker for signing into law the Transparency in Private Attorney Contracting Act (AB 27). The law promotes transparency and limits contingency fees when the State of Wisconsin hire outside private plaintiffs’ lawyers. FACT Act Preserves Money for Future Asbestos Victims

In her article that appears in The Hill Blog, Lisa Rickard, President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform, discusses federal legislation that ensures future asbestos victims will be compensated.

According to the article, the federal Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency (FACT) Act (H.R. 982) would require various asbestos trusts to file quarterly reports with the bankruptcy courts detailing who has filed a claim and how much money was paid out. Wisconsin Civil Justice Council Receives Outstanding Organization Award

The Wisconsin Civil Justice Council has gained national recognition for its role in passing sweeping legal reforms in 2011 and its continued commitment to combating lawsuit abuse.

Wisconsin Reforms Draw National Attention

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Wisconsin Senate passed AB 27, Transparency in Private Attorney Contracting (TIPAC), on a bipartisan vote, 23-10 (five Democrats joined all 18 Republicans). The U.S. Chamber applauds AB 27 as “Nation’s Strongest Outside Counsel Sunshine Law,” while the American Tort Reform Association proclaimed to its national audience that the “New Law Will Help Make Wisconsin More Attractive to Employers.” Continue reading “Wisconsin Reforms Draw National Attention” →

WCJC Wins 2013 Outstanding Organization Award

In recognition for its role in passing sweeping legal reform in 2011 and its continued commitment to combating lawsuit abuse, WCJC has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform Outstanding Organization Award.

“This award acknowledges WCJC’s work with state lawmakers and the Walker administration in enacting legislation to promote business and job growth in Wisconsin,” said Bill G. Smith, WCJC President and State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

WCJC’s Executive Director, Robert Fassbender, will accept the award on behalf of WCJC’s 18 member board and litigation reform partners on October 23 at the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform’s 14th Annual Legal Reform Summit in Washington, D.C.
